Retford Careforce launched its local Falls Awareness with two events recently. One at Westmorland House in Retford and then at Abbey Grove, Worksop. Both are sheltered housing schemes where the team provides extra care. Falls Awareness is a group community initiative designed to help prevent loss of independence resulting from a fall at home. Carers are distributing information to service users and their families about measures that might help prevent a fall and they are also giving out free pairs of safer slippers to those who need them. Poor footwear, particularly ill-fitting slippers, are a major cause of falling. Branch Manager Angie Kay faced Careforce's own Dragons at the Annual Conference in October. Group Directors had invited branches to pitch for a sum of money towards a project that supported their local community. Angie persuaded the Dragons to donate a substantial sum of money towards building a garden for the residents of Abbey Grove - a project that they have been trying to get underway for several years. Travis Perkins have agreed to support the project by donating hard-landscaping materials and plant for clearing the site. The picture below shows Angie Kay, with Stephen Hughes, Travis Perkins National Accounts Manager with the new garden design for Abbey Grove, and some 'before' shots of the garden they hope to transform.
