We are fantastic fundraisers
Lisburn branch got a special mention at the Group Conference for their amazing teamwork and commitment to community projects. During the course of 2008 Lisburn staff raised thousands of pounds for a variety of local and national causes.
The branch has held a series of Falls Awareness events and handed out safer slippers to service users. The events were organised by Jane Montgomery the Branch Trainer and Manager Paul Doran who put on a presentation about the danger of falls in the home and what preventative measures can be taken to reduce the risks.
Eighteeen staff completed the Broadway Underpass walk in March to raise money for a Belfast Day Centre for young people with MS. The team raised £1200 which was matched by Group Chairman Bob Holt.
Lisburn's Teddy project
Lisburn branch launched its knitted teddy scheme in January and already more than 150 teddies have been knitted and our bears are travelling the world. 50 teddies have accompanied a Mears team on a working visit to Sri Lanka and other teddies have gone to children of the Masai in Kenya, to a children’recovery unit in the Philippines and to the Royal Hospital for sick children in Belfast.
The idea behind the scheme is to send teddies to children in need around the world - those that are recovering from illness or injury or just have nothing of their own. It has been shown that having a teddy to comfort them has a significant positive effect on their well-being and can help with the progress of their recovery.
Three Lisburn carers are running regular knitting classes in local day centres and service users, staff and their families from all sides of the business are supporting the campaign and there are people knitting bears all around the UK. It’s a fantastic success. Keep those bears coming everyone.
