New Futures provides support for adults with learning disabilities in their day to day lives: in college or further education, with work placements and with their social needs: for example providing the support they need to attend a club, or join in an activity which they would not be able to do otherwise.
New Futures can provide support for anything from five hours/week up to 24 hours/day.
New Futures presents music equipment to Basildon’ Ashleigh Centre
Branch Manager, Daralyn Williams’, successfully won over Group 'Dragons’ at the October conference when she put in a pitch for music equipment for the Ashleigh Day Centre during a spoof Dragons' Den. New Futures works closely with the Ashleigh centre as many of its service users also attend there for day care or social events. A formal presentation took place in December to coincide with New Futures' Christmas party night. The team wanted to help Ashleigh to buy the equipment because it would provide them both with opportunities to hold more music and social events - which are crucial to the wellbeing of young people with learning or physical disabilities.
Daralyn explains “as a team we have chosen to support the Ashleigh Centre as its work is complementary to our own and it provides an excellent environment for social interaction for the people we look after. Music is highly important to all young adults but many of our service users don’t feel comfortable attending public events. They also want to run dances and discos themselves but if the equipment is hired there are restrictions on its use. Having their own disco and karaoke means that they can hold events more frequently and that they have access to the equipment at any time.
New Futures Christmas party night was funded entirely by its staff who raised £450. Carol Oliver together with many of the branch’s support workers, organised the disco, decorations and all the food, and 35 of them went along to support their service users at the event.
