Congratulations to Paul Manning Care Newcomer of the Year North East
Paul won the Care Newcomer 2009 award at a ceremony held in Newcastle on Friday 23 November.
Paul began his career in care earlier this year and very quickly demonstrated an excellent approach and understanding of outcome-based care.
One of Paul’s service users was losing weight dramatically and his daughter was very concerned as nobody could find out the cause. Paul spent time gaining the service user’s trust while he undertook his care duties and soon realised that the gentleman was only pretending to eat his food. He talked to him to try and find out why as tbhere was no medical cause and discovered that he found the the frozen meals that were being delivered unpalatable . Paul began asking him what he wanted to eat that day during his morning call and then shopped for what the service user wanted on his way to his lunchtime visit - cooking it freshly for him.
Paul notified his Manager about the problem who raised it with the Social Services team: after an assessment an additional allocation of time was put on the care plan for shopping and Paul now also takes the service user shopping weekly so he can choose his own food.
